I lift first and foremost because I enjoy it. I can’t explain why because I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want to see how much you can do. It wasn’t always that simple, going to a gym in the first instance was difficult and I will blog about those early days in the not too distant future.
I get a kick out of getting better. Yes, genetics come into your total potential but in terms of how you progress towards your potential, it’s all you bro. It’s your hard work, and nothing else, that results in progress. There’s not many things in life where it’s that straight forward and I enjoy the simplicity in the rewarding nature of it.
I didn’t know that until I started to make progress. At first I lifted because I wanted to look bigger but that’s a fairly boring goal to me and I got bigger at a consequence of training for strength anyway.
I have a real curiosity about what my potential is. Can I set a bench world record? I really don’t know, ask me again in 10 years and I might have a better answer. But I do know the only way to find out is to try and if at the end of the day I’ve gave it by best shot them I can be proud regardless.
