Gender Recognition Act
The Gender Recognition Act makes it possible for transgender people to change the gender on their birth certificate by obtaining a gender recognition certificate. These certificates replace the original birth certificate and are entirely indistinguishable from birth certificates. There is no requirement to medically transition to be issued a gender recognition certificate therefore it is not relevant to sport performance.
The Act provides addition protection to people with gender recognition certificates. Should a person acting in an official capacity become aware that an individual is transgender, they must provide complete confidentiality if this individual has a gender recognition certificate. There is no legal obligation for a transgender person to disclose whether or not they have a gender recognition certificate. The practical implication is that all people acting in an official capacity must provide confidentiality regarding any person being trans.

The Equality Act provides protect to all people on the grounds of gender reassignment. Gender reassignment is defined as taking any step to transition medically, legally or social therefore it should be expected to apply to all transgender people and many people who think they may be transgender.

- harassment- e.g. creating an environment transgender people will find intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive
- victimisation- e.g. transgender people being treated negatively because they made a complaint under the Equality Act
